The Grand Republic of Zymith (Also referred to as simply "The Republic") was an affluent merchant republic that based its economy and welfare mostly around international trade.

Overview[]

Initially, Zymith planned on adopting policies of neutrality in attempts to make the most of their advantageous position along a central river and to foster trade relations, but upon realizing the power of a united southern federation, the republic elected to join and play a prominent role in the Halcyon Commonwealth. Later, Zymith was designated the capital of the Halcyon Empire after the Archmaester of the Church of Obhor and prominent nobleman of Zymith, Aulus Megellus I, was elected emperor.

History[]

The Grand City of Zymith was founded on a small river by its doge, Edward Florik. Initially, the Doge had ambitions of making the city the most prosperous and illustrious settlement in Veria, but as time moved on the Doge adopted more humble plans for the city, focusing more on the prosperity of his own people and on keeping Veria a peaceful place. Early on in the settlement's development, the ambitious pilgrim Aulus Megellus happened across the city, and the Doge was quite fond of him, taking him in with open arms and adopting the religion he brought from his homeland, Obhorism. Obhorism then spread rapidly among the citizens of Zymith, soon becoming the official religion of the city state. The city expanded eastward and to the north as more room was needed. Eventually, Zymith became the host city of the Council of Nations, furthering its position as Veria's bastion of peace, neutrality, and prosperity. The Council of Nations was held in Zymith throughout the written history of Veria, but, since the republic elected to join the Halcyon Commonwealth and then the Empire, world politics changed, and Zymith lost its sense of neutrality, attributed mostly to the Empire's aggressiveness towards non-member states. The Council of Nations became a more hostile meeting as time moved on, and Doge Florik and Aulus had to remove many nations' memberships to keep the order. The city's square was also where the impromptu execution of Gilgamesh the Great occured, after many high-ranking empire officials decided to execute him for high treason behind Aulus' back.
